About Me

What’s up! 👋🏽 My name is JR Smith and I am an aspiring orthopaedic surgeon and content creator obsessed with personal growth. After years of working as a programmer for several top tech companies, I decided it was time to go into business for myself. After just one year, I doubled my income and helped more people than ever before.

I am a fourth-year medical student pursuing orthopedic surgery, a YouTuber, Podcaster, Entrepreneur, and most importantly a husband and father. I’ve always been committed to self-improvement, and over the last few years I began sharing the strategies I am using to grow personally and professionally with you all!

Quick Facts

I’m 28 years old, born and raised in Denver, CO.

I am married to my beautiful wife Madison, and we have toddler named Khari.

I am an orthopedic surgery resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

I graduated from Duke University where I was the captain of the Track & Field team, became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and majored in evolutionary anthropology (hence the “Evolving Medic”).

I started my YouTube channel in 2020, my first podcast in 2021, my newsletter and second podcast in 2022, and my mentorship community in 2023.

My content centers around evidence-based strategies to excel as students and grow as people.

What is most important in my life

My family and our faith are at the center of who I am, and are the key motivators for who I want to become. A lot of my content aims to prove that you can pursue your career goals with a family if that is what you would like to do.

As a result, I talk a lot about productivity and time management tips.

From DI Athlete to Medical Student

I did not grow up interested in a career in healthcare. It wasn’t until I experienced a limb threatening injury that I truly appreciated the impact that physicians have on their patients. Now, I’ve found purpose in providing the the same gift of restoration to patients of my own, that my orthopedic surgeon once gave me.

Current Projects

đź©ş I founded a community called Teach As You learn where premedical students receive access to mentorship from current medical students across the country and guidance throughout the application cycle.

📸 I create videos on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok ranging from study tips to day in the life vlogs.

📧 I write a semi-weekly newsletter sharing brief stories or bits of encouragement to help motivate you to have a successful week. My newsletter community is always first to know all updates and future plans I have so make sure to subscribe if you haven’t already!

Future Plans

🦴 Ultimately I want to be an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. I’ll keep you updated if plans change!

🧑‍💻 I am planning on creating more formal courses that will be in the format of a video series that students can work through on their own time. These courses will walk you through successfully crafting an application and excelling in the preclinical and clinical phases of medical school.

📚 I have the goal of writing multiple books throughout my life… just waiting for a little “vacation” time. They will probably be related to story-telling, productivity, and overcoming hardship.

Why I started all of this

The improvement we seek in the world is dependent on each one of us growing individually. Everything I create has the goal of motivating myself and others to #KeepEvolving
